Sylvia Vander Sluis is a mixed-media artist who explores material’s expressive potential. Using a variety of papers, cheesecloth, acrylic, and fiber, she is now creating complex forms using wrapping, bunching and layering techniques. From 2017-2019, her handwoven and hand-knit fiber figures talked about the nature of personal power and resilience. In her “Torso” and “Pelvis” series, Vander Sluis played with both masculine and feminine forms. “My work gives the personal a physical presence that has emotional power,” she states. “I like the idea of making what is most vulnerable in us strong and beautiful.
