About | For years, Helen Lozoraitis balanced her artwork and her high tech career in and around Cambridge, MA. She was a fiber artist in the Sign of the Dove Gallery in the early 2000s, and a founding member of their year-round store in 2003. She was a member of Arlington Center for the Arts, the Cambridge Art Association, and a Boston-area art critique group. Lozoraitis studied with several local instructors and also at Snow Farm, the New England Craft Program in Williamsburg, MA.
Dumpster Planet is made up of twelve images taken from original photographs of rusty blue dumpsters that lurked in Lozoraitis’s neighborhood for months. It began as a statement on environmental destruction that humans were inflicting on the Earth, but by the time it was finished, some of the "planets" looked almost beautiful and the piece felt much more hopeful. The piece portrays the awareness of the damage that humans have done to our blue planet, but also our desire and capacity to help heal it.
