About | Liminality is revealed in Barbara Simcoe's work as the metaphorical threshold between outer reality and the inner subconscious. There can be a balance in that, however, as she works with multiple photographs in a piece, she engages her desire to disrupt harmony in favor of fragmentation and disorientation. This is a means employed to create scenarios that evoke questioning. Narrative undercurrents are intentional and are meant to be felt, not understood.  She wants to give form to that which is incomprehensible as the manifestation of an uncomfortable beauty. Encountering that which is unknowable prompts discernment that mystery is inevitable and insoluble. The female figuration she employs is gestural in posture, often head turned away from the viewer in poses that are intimate. They project a vulnerability that is engulfed in unreal spaces amid tentative architectural fragmentations. The images of passageways, stairs, orifices, arches and domed vaults are a means to create entry to the works.
