About | Stories cross the boundaries of time joining the past to the future by serving as components of cultural preservation, social connection and moral education. A child’s questions about what life is are often answered with a story. For those questions Bill Porter turned to his father, an Irish immigrant who loved and appreciated nature. His career as a painting contractor enabled Porter's suburban American upbringing, which provided exposure to visual modes of storytelling propagated through popular culture. Porter has always been fascinated by the unique visual language of illustrated images found in comics, cartoons, and even coloring pages from his Sunday school assignments. By re-engaging with these sources Porter's practice serves as an investigation into the mashup of narratives that influenced his formative understanding of heritage, religion and the mysteries of life. Working with house paint, book pages and reclaimed wood, he recontextualizes forms culled from the space of memory, fostering narratives between images, text and materials.
