About | Quilting since the early 1980s, Carol Anne Grotrian soon discovered Japanese shibori. The organic patterns of this ancient tie-dye tradition helped her find her voice in landscape quilts. For 33 years, her subject is usually a quiet sense of the “breathing spaces” she has experienced. The ever-present subtext of ecology is rarely direct. She has always slow stitched — quilting by hand and for the last decade, used raw edge appliqué and Japanese boro stitching. Grotrian passes on these textile traditions by teaching, exhibiting, and working in her home studio in Cambridge, MA.

Grotrian appreciates indigo’s special relationship with shibori; how a measured quiet handling of the vat prolongs its life. Like hand stitching, it helps her center herself in an almost meditative way.

Poems also inspire her quilts. Grotrian believes words matter, especially today. Experiencing a moment of simple beauty in poetry or landscape can offer a welcome antidote to today’s divisive tensions.

Stitched indigo shibori is a perfect technique for depicting moons, as well as the moonflowers. Grotrian’s artwork titled There is Nothing You Can See That Is Not a Flower, There Is Nothing You Can Think That Is Not the Moon (Basho) is a quote from Japanese 17th-century poet Basho.
