About | I am a representational painter from Maine. I consider my paintings visual reverberations of my experiences of this world.
I bring personal items into my work. I study and reflect on the objects and the stories held within. I stage them in environments that leave them open to interpretation and association.
My “Remnants” series is several painted compositions of a carpet dating back to my great grandparents. The concept of family walking on it for generations gives my imagination space to wander. Who walked on this carpet? What conversations took place here? For me, the dominant color RED in these paintings symbolizes life and familial love–family woven together through generations.
The vibrant colors of this carpet are made of natural dyes extracted from plants, and I liken the floral motifs to a walk in the garden. I paint this series on my knees as if tending the land; perhaps a subconscious nod to my paternal family’s past working the farm. The carpet's wear over time adds a physical connection to my lineage, a focus of my "Remnants" series.
