About | The tools available today, allow for the exploration of imagery which, in their immediacy, is appropriate to our tech-driven culture today. Catherine Caddigan’s work speaks to the frenetic bombardment of information all around us today. She is influenced by her years in graphic design before digital imaging was possible, often building an image using an Xacto knife. Her work is driven by the process, making changes and decisions at each stage, letting a story unfold, not conscious of where a piece will go. She often uses portraiture as her subject matter, developing a character by layering and painting, adding mundane elements, giving "more than a capture" to the viewer, hopefully telling a story that goes beyond the countenance of her subject. She invites the viewer to go on their own journey with the image after it is created. (During the recent pandemic she relied heavily on self portraits.) Caddigan's imagery frequently deals with women's issues and other current cultural subjects.
