About | Kathryn Geismar’s portraits are drawn in graphite on translucent DuraLar sheets, which are then overlapped, intermingling the identities and creating a blurring of distinct selves. Many of these drawings are life-size, in reference to the real people Geismar is depicting. The DuraLar is held together by grommets which are utilitarian while also referring to piercings, body markings, and jewelry. The grommets allow the two portraits to be fully attached and yet mostly float free. Once combined, the figures and faces merge and separate, legible yet enigmatic, telling their own relational story.
